DIY Chalkboard Makeover

Pinterest strikes again.. tempting me to redo and makeover things around my house, and go shopping for craft supplies, and such..

I got this chalkboard at JoAnn's last year on Clearance.
I really dont like the "rooster" decor on the above part.. and my original plan was to cover it with burlap fabric since the shade in my kitchen window I made from burlap....
We use this board in our kitchen to make lists of meal ideas for the week

But I was covering the bottom with another coat of paint and I decided just to black out the top with Chalkboard paint too.. easier.. I can always still cover it later..

I put three coats on each section.

Much Better!!!!!!

Then I seasoned the chalkboard.

Which just means rubbing chalk all over it to help it soak in..
Then I erased.

And it has a vintagey (word?) look to it... soo much better than that Rooster!

DIY Chalkboard

DIY Chalkboard Frame

I wanted to make a large chalkboard.

So I got this frame at the local thrift store for $3.00, and I already had all the other supplies below.

Supplies:
Chalkboard Paint

Painters Tape
Brush

White Acrylic Paint

{this is how I purchased the frame- $3.00}

I applied about 3-4 coats of chalkboard paint between drying.

At first it appeared to have a lot of streaks, but blended in well with re-application.

After it was good and dry, I taped off the interior and painted the outside a "cool white"

Just everyday acrylic paint from the craft store.. It took a couple coats as well.

And Voila! I LOVE how it turned out!

Im planning on using it for SJ's party this weekend, and then I might hang it on our 3rd floor where her playroom is.

I love using chalkboard paint too, I taped off a section behind one of our pantry doors, and I use it to jot down groceries when I think of something when Im in the kitchen and there is no pen/paper in sight.. cause if I dont write it down THAT MINUTE.. its gone! ha!
